Econs Essay Skills – Strategies for Economics Distinction
In order to do very well, you have to ensure the following:
- Your Econs essay answer must be well supported with examples.
When we mean examples, we mean a response that is relevant to the context of the given question. It may an economy, a group of countries, such as a trade bloc, a market , an industry or even a group of consumers.
The list of examples is almost limitless, so again, when we demonstrate this in class, you will learn the underlying principles in using examples.
- Your answer must be well analysed.
This will prove to be very difficult for most students. Generally, your answer must be balanced in some way, depending on the questions’ requirements.
You may have to explain alternative policies, offer differing impacts on a market or economy.
At odd times, you may even have to provide obscure reasons for a phenomenon. This is often seen in questions that cut across 2 or more topics.
- Your response must provide some form of eventual evaluation.
This is another stumbling block for many pupils, whereby you are expected to provide some kind of judgement on your own answer. The easiest type is to evaluate the policies in your answer, largely in terms of effectiveness and appropriateness.
For example, in the case of taxes in markets, you can invoke the concept of price elasticity of demand (PED) to gauge whether the tax policy will be effectiveness in achieving the objectives of a government.
In the case of say, Fiscal Policy, when you recall the large withdrawals that occur in an economy such as Singapore, you will easily recognise the accompanying small multiplier value that will restrict the effectiveness of the fiscal policy in aiming to overcome a recession in Singapore.
Of course, beyond the policy evaluation, there are other types as well. Our JC Economics tutor will go through thoroughly each and every type of evaluation possibilities.
